Whale Watching in the Bay of Banderas
How to Find a Responsible Tour Company

By Robin Noelle

Each year the humpback whales return from the frigid waters of the north to the warm, clear waters of Banderas Bay. They travel hundreds of miles to do one of two things; mate or give birth. Fortunately for the millions of visitors during the 2008-2009 whale watching season (December 8 – March 23), this can provide some amazing opportunities to see these massive mammals up close and personal as they demonstrate some incredible natural behaviors.

Obviously mating and giving birth are fairly delicate times, not just for humans but for whales as well. If you plan on heading out on the bay to watch the whales, it’s important that you select a responsible whale watching company for your tour.

How Do You Know If a Company Is Responsible?

  • Make sure they have a permit. Each year special permits are handed out to legitimate whale watching organizers. They must display the appropriate colored flag on their boat at all times.
  • Small boats mean small impact. The noise and pollutants from larger boats can be disturbing and/or destructive. Look for tour providers who use small boats and take out small groups.
  • Keep it quiet. Avoid boats with PA systems, that play loud music or encourage yelling and screaming.
  • They employ professional guides. Look for groups that employ marine biologists, oceanographers and conservationists. Not only will they know more about responsible whale watching but you will learn a lot more about the behavior and lives of these fascinating animals.

By selecting a responsible whale watching company, you can help ensure that the whales will keep returning to the Bay of Banderas year after year.
